ATHLETES at London 2012 could be booted out if they break rules on online posting

A year or so ago I bought some lovely skewers with a pig design on from my favourite cookshop in Paris, E Dehillerin in the Rue Coquillière. I've actually only just started using them but they look great, in a twee sort of way. This recipe involves most bits of the pig but you can really use whatever cuts and offal you fancy. It's also a great way to use rare breed pork from farms where you have to buy a quarter of a beast. Richard Vaughan at Huntsham Farm in Herefordshire does exactly that with his Middle White pork and Longhorn beef.

A 14-part series that attempts to make simple and accessible one of the most complex subjects imaginable will be distributed via booklets given away free with The Independent and The Independent on Sunday beginning tomorrow, and will simultaneously be made available at independent.co.uk/historyoftheworld. Starting with the origins of the Universe itself, it traces the formation of our planet, the first stirrings of life, the shaping of the continents, the evolution of species, the birth of the human race, and the millennia of history that have led up to the sophisticated but precarious civilisations of the present day.

Fabio Capello will have talks with Football Association chairman David Bernstein later this week over his public criticism of the governing body with the two sides still not yet reconciled on the issue of John Terry's sacking as captain.

It was a tragedy only for the New England Patriots, and anything but a farce. But Super Bowl history has repeated itself, and in the space of just four years. The Patriots usually beat anyone in the National Football League's supreme showcase event. Anyone, that is, except the New York Giants.

Team Sky secured a respectable third place in yesterday's team time-trial stage of the Tour of Qatar, with their leader Mark Cavendish moving up to 20th place overall, just 12 seconds down on the race leader Tom Boonen

Ian Holloway says his class of 2012 can stand shoulder to shoulder with any of the club's big names from the past as he prepares Blackpool for their FA Cup replay at Sheffield Wednesday tonight.

There was always more to Sugar Ray Leonard than the smile and his role as the eternal good guy of boxing. There is now, finally, an autobiography from Leonard that puts an end to the happy Mr America with gloves image that helped make him one of boxing's biggest stars and a fighter that dominated in the ring, even as his life was in turmoil.

Joey Barton will not face any legal action over his observations about the John Terry racism case.

Co-hosts Gabon shrugged off their African Cup of Nations exit with an indifference that threatens to be mirrored by empty seats as interest in the latter stages of the tournament wanes. Gabon surpassed expectations by reaching the quarter-finals and after defeat by Mali on penalties on Sunday they chose to look on the bright side rather than dwell on disappointment.

Joe Root's unbeaten century helped England Lions clinch a 3-2 win in the unofficial one-day series against Sri Lanka A with a 117-run win in Colombo.

The Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel dismissed his chances of running away with a third straight driver's title because of rule changes that have cost Red Bull, whose new 2012 car was unveiled yesterday.

The Wolves midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong is returning to Arsenal after his loan spell with Wolverhampton Wanderers was cut short by a serious knee injury that has ended his season.

Those who are calling for immediate change in England's Test team may be disappointed. It is, of course, the convention to call for multiple sackings, a few axeings and probably a beheading or two when teams are defeated as comprehensively as England have been in the past month.

One question above all seemed unlikely to be asked about the world's top Test team. But it was being put with understandable insistence last night: never mind the world, are this lot the best Test side in England?

Players' union chief Gordon Taylor fears the recent crowd abuse suffered by Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand could deter footballers from complaining about racial discrimination.

The England coach, Andy Flower, admitted yesterday that his side were simply not ready to take on Pakistan after slumping to a 3-0 series defeat.

Last Thursday, Papiss Demba Cissé arrived in the North-east of England for the second time in his life. The following day, he was driving around looking for a house. Come Sunday afternoon, at around three o'clock, he had a new home: St James' Park.

The Rugby Football League says there is no cause for alarm over Widnes's new artificial pitch, despite complaints from players over cuts and grazes in its first match.
